Raising Boys Without Men

Raising thriving, emotionally healthy sons does not require a man around the house! That's the conclusion of a groundbreaking research study that will open eyes, stir debate, and reassure nearly 10 million single mothers.

As the number of single-mom and two-mom households has grown, so have concerns about the possible damage to boys caused by the lack of a male role model in the house. Peggy F. Drexler, Ph.D., listened to all the dire warnings; but her training as a research psychologist told her she had to see the evidence. So she embarked on a long-term study comparing boys raised in female-headed families with those whose fathers were present throughout their childhood. What Dr. Drexler discovered is as heartening as it is startling:

  • Female-headed households may be even better parents for boys than households with men
  • Sons from these families are growing up emotionally stronger, more empathetic, and more well-rounded than boys from "traditional" mother-father families
  • While more in touch with their feelings, these boys remain boyish and masculine in all the ways defined by our culture

Raising Boys Without Men offers an inclusive vision of what family can mean and a blueprint for raising happier, healthier sons.

"Truly a cutting-edge book . . . important for everyone who cares about the future of the American family." --Carol Gilligan, author of The Birth of Pleasure.

"We urgently need this book."--Anthony Lewis, author of Gideon's Trumpet

Raising A Boy, 2009-05-25 07:49:56.0

I just finished reading raising Boys Without Men: How Maverick Moms are Creating the next generations of Exceptional Men. What an awesome read! I was concerned that my son would be at some type of disadvantage because his father and I have divorced, but I see that not having dad in the house doesn't mean the end for him, but the beginning of creating a wonderful and caring man. Having tried to stay in a relationship so that my son could see how to be a man, I questioned myself with the type of man he was seeing. Did I want him to have the traits of kindness, or did I want him to learn how to be disrespectful? That was a question that I wrestled with even after we had gone our own ways. This book has empowered me to know that the decision I had to make wasn't a bad one, or one horribly flawed and would negatively impact my son. He sees his dad, but he also sees other men behaving in a more respectful attitude. I also understand that it isn't about having a man to teach him how to be a man, but about people teaching him how to be a thoughtful person, to respect people regardless of sex.
